Two people have been arrested for their suspected involvement in a major bank robbery in Kathmandu. Police believe they helped steal 18 kilograms of gold and around Rs 5 crore in cash from the Rastriya Banijya Bank branch in Baneshwor.

The robbery took place on September 9 during the Gen-Z protests. The incident happened when the streets were filled with crowds and chaos, making it difficult for security forces to control the situation.

The case became public after Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Prof. Dr. Biswo Nath Poudel spoke about it in a podcast with Sushant Pradhan. He said that while Nepal Rastra Bank and other institutions remained safe, the state-owned Rastriya Banijya Bank suffered a large loss.

According to the governor, about Rs 50 million in cash and nearly 18 kilograms of gold were stolen from the bank’s branch located inside the Parliament complex. It was one of the biggest thefts reported during the protests.

Police have confirmed that two suspects are now in custody. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and collecting evidence to identify others who may have been involved. The names of the arrested individuals have not yet been released.

Authorities are still trying to recover the stolen cash and gold. The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected as police continue to search for the remaining suspects.

The incident has raised serious concerns about security inside high-protection areas and how such a large theft could take place during a time of national unrest.
