More than 50 million rupees in cash and over 18 kilograms of gold have been looted from the Baneshwor branch of Rastriya Banijya Bank. The branch is located next to the parliament building.
The incident happened on Bhadra 24 during the Gen-Z protest movement. According to the bank’s chief executive officer, Devendra Raman Khanal, a violent group entered the branch in the name of the protest.
He said the group first broke the CCTV cameras inside the branch. After that, they looted cash and gold from the bank.
A preliminary investigation shows that more than 50 million rupees in cash and over 18 kilograms of gold were stolen from the Baneshwor branch alone. The bank has already informed Nepal Rastra Bank about the incident. Police have also inspected the site and started an investigation. Even though the CCTV was destroyed, videos taken by media and individuals during the looting could help police with their investigation.
The CEO also confirmed that some other counters of Rastriya Banijya Bank in different parts of the country were damaged during the unrest.
