A gang was arrested for trying insurance scam in Nepal Micro Insurance Company out of around 60 lakh rupees by submitting fake documents claiming motor accidents. Police at Tinkune arrested six people who created fake papers from V & V Hospital to make third-party insurance claims.

Who was behind the Scam?

Six people were arrested. They include:

  • Manoj Kumar Acharya, 45, from Nijgadh, Bara, now in Kageshwari, Kathmandu
  • Hari Prasad Gautam from Panchkhal, Kavre
  • Sunil Sapkota from Sarlahi, now in Kathmandu
  • Vinod Dangol from Kathmandu
  • Sunil Maharjan, 36, from Godawari
  • Bikesh Kunwar, 33

One of them was even an employee of the insurance company.

How did the Scam work?

The gang insured vehicles in different names and then submitted fake accident documents to claim insurance. Police found that they had submitted more than 15 claims. The company had already paid 13 claims, while two were still pending.

According to the police, the company employee helped the gang by submitting false reports after inspecting the claims. This made it easier for the gang to receive payments. The company became suspicious and sent a legal advisor to investigate. The advisor discovered the claims were based on fake documents, and the company then filed a complaint with the police.

The gang also used fake stamps and letterheads from government offices to make the documents look real. Police said this was not the first insurance scam in the country. Many small and large frauds happen, but companies often remain silent to protect their brand.

Nepal Micro Insurance, however, shared confidential information with the police and took bold action. The company said this step helped stop the scam and also strengthened public trust in the insurance industry.
