Nepal’s Supreme Court has formed a special constitutional bench to hear one of the country’s most debated cases the dissolution of the House of Representatives. The case, which has drawn national attention, will decide whether the move was legal and within the powers of the prime minister and the president.

Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut will lead the five-member team. The other justices in the bench are Sapana Pradhan Malla, Kumar Regmi, Hari Prasad Phuyal, and Manoj Kumar Sharma. This bench will review whether the dissolution followed the constitution, the limits of executive authority, and what legal steps can be taken to resolve the political vacuum that followed.

After the parliament was dissolved, Nepal’s political environment turned unstable. Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned under growing public and political pressure. Since then, debates over whether to restore parliament or hold fresh elections have intensified. Several political parties, lawyers, and civil groups filed petitions in the Supreme Court calling the dissolution unconstitutional.

Experts say the verdict will not only decide the fate of parliament but also shape how the constitution’s key articles 76, 85, and those defining presidential powers—are interpreted. It’s being seen as a historic chance to clarify Nepal’s parliamentary system and the limits of political authority.

The date for the first hearing has not yet been fixed. But with the formation of this bench, political discussions have gained new heat. All eyes are now on the five judges—will they bring parliament back or clear the way for new elections?
