Kathmandu shops fined for hiding MRP prices: Rs 3.65 lakh penalty collected

The Department of Commerce, Supplies, and Consumer Protection has taken action against several shops and firms in Kathmandu and Lalitpur for breaking consumer rules. The department fined 15 businesses and gave warnings to 13 others after checking different shops on Sunday.

During the inspection, the department’s team visited 29 shops and found that many of them were not showing the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) or price list as required by law. For this reason, the department collected a total fine of Rs. 3,65,000.

Who faced the penalty?

Among the fined shops, KK Metal Store in Kathmandu–13 received the highest fine of Rs. 1,00,000. Shraddha Bhada Pasal in Kathmandu–27, Prakash Baniya Bhada Pasal in Kathmandu–24, and Baniya Bandhu Bhada Pasal in Kathmandu–24 were each fined Rs. 50,000.

Agni Handicraft Industry in Kathmandu–10, Jalpa Super Market Pvt. Ltd. in Kathmandu–20, and WS Dry Foods were fined Rs. 20,000 each.

Similarly, Tamrakar Shopping Center in Lalitpur–19, Baniya Kitchen Craft in Kathmandu–13, and Maa Bhawani Kirana Store were fined Rs. 10,000 each.

Vikas General Impex, Jai Bholenath Store, Balbhakta Shrestha, Tamrakar Store, and Muskan Store were each fined Rs. 5,000.

The department also gave general instructions to 14 other shops to follow the rules properly. Officials said that such inspections are part of regular monitoring to make sure consumers are treated fairly and prices are transparent.
