The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has announced new airfare rates for domestic flights during major festivals like Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath. But instead of relief, the decision has sparked anger among passengers as the fares are unusually high.

According to the government-approved maximum fare, Kathmandu–Bhadrapur costs Rs 12,621, Kathmandu–Nepalgunj Rs 13,750, Kathmandu–Dhangadhi Rs 17,571, and Kathmandu–Surkhet Rs 9,030. Surprisingly, the minimum fare for the Kathmandu–Dhangadhi route is higher than the airfare from Kathmandu to India’s capital, New Delhi.

Many travelers complain that on normal days, tickets to these destinations are available at 40–50 percent lower prices. But as festivals approach, the fares rise sharply, which passengers see as unfair and exploitative.

CAAN argues that the maximum fare is set to manage the heavy demand during festive seasons. However, consumer rights activists say the government should protect passengers from exploitation instead of allowing airlines to impose such heavy costs.

CAAN has also urged passengers to immediately report to Tribhuvan International Airport’s system or call 01411363 if they are charged more than the fixed maximum fare.

But many travelers are left questioning: “Shouldn’t festivals make travel easier, not add more burden?”

This airfare controversy has also created ripples in the stock market. Analysts warn that when domestic travel becomes so expensive, people may cut back on festival shopping and leisure spending, which could affect listed companies in retail, hospitality, and tourism. While airline operators might see a short-term rise in revenue, the overall market sentiment could weaken as high travel costs reduce liquidity and consumer confidence in other sectors.
