The government is planning to include Nepal Sambat on Nepali currency notes.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki announced this while addressing a program in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, on Wednesday to mark Nepal Sambat 1146.
She said the process would move forward after consulting the relevant authorities.
“I am committed to advancing the process of including Nepal Sambat on the notes issued by Nepal Rastra Bank in consultation with the concerned parties,” Prime Minister Karki said.
Why Nepal Sambat?
Nepal Sambat has a long history. 1146 years ago, during King Raghav Dev’s reign, Shankhadhar Sakhwa helped citizens who were in debt by clearing their loans.
Shankhadhar was later declared a National Hero in 2056 BS, and Nepal Sambat was recognized as the national calendar on Kartik 7, 2065 BS.
The prime minister said that government offices will also implement Nepal Sambat, and ministries will be instructed to ensure proper use. She added that the government will work with institutions to monitor and support the process.
Nepalese banknotes might soon not just be money, they’ll be a symbol of history and culture.
