Nepal Rastra Bank’s Executive Director Dr. Gunakar Bhatta has reached his mandatory retirement. He officially went on leave starting today, Thursday.

The bank has rules for retirement based on service and age: 30 years of service, 58 years of age, 12 years for senior directors, and 7 years for executive directors.

According to the Nepal Rastra Bank staff rules, an executive director retires after completing 7 years in the position. Bhatta’s term has now come to an end. Bhatta joined Nepal Rastra Bank in 2000 (2057 BS) as an assistant director. He became Executive Director in November 2018 (Kartik 2075 BS). So Bhatta worked at Nepal Rastra Bank for 25 years in total.

During his tenure, Bhatta held long-term responsibilities in the Economic Research Department. He also worked in the Bank Supervision Department, Financial Institution Regulation Department, Payment System Department, and Monetary Management Department.

Earlier, in Chaitra last year, Bhatta was in the race to become the new governor after Governor Mahaprasad Adhikari retired. However, due to political disagreements within the ruling party, he could not secure the governor’s post. The then-serving governor, Nilam Dhungana, had not accepted resignations required for Bhatta to take over.

After Biswo Paudel was appointed the new governor, Bhatta continued as the Executive Director in the Governor’s Office until today.
