The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has warned that the monsoon will become more active from October 3 (Ashoj 17) as a new low-pressure system develops in the Bay of Bengal.
Why It Matters
Meteorologist Binu Maharjan explained that the weather system moving from Odisha through central India is likely to push moisture-filled monsoon winds into Nepal. This will bring heavier rainfall to several provinces during the Dashain holidays.
Expected Rainfall
- Ashoj 17: Light to moderate rain in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini, with chances of heavy rain in some places.
- Ashoj 18: Widespread rainfall in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini, including heavy to very heavy rain in certain areas.
- Ashoj 19: More rain expected in the same provinces, with the risk of very heavy rain and even extreme rainfall in a few spots.
Possible Risks
Officials have cautioned that continuous rainfall could cause floods, landslides, soil erosion, and even disrupt road and air travel. With Dashain travel at its peak, the department has requested everyone to stay alert and follow updated weather reports.
Festival Under the Clouds
This year’s Dashain is likely to remain under the influence of monsoon conditions, with cloudy skies and frequent rainfall across much of the country. Travelers and communities in flood- and landslide-prone areas are especially advised to remain careful.
