Jaimini Municipality has started a small but meaningful step to support families with newborn daughters. The goal is simple: make parents feel proud when a daughter is born.

Under the program called Jaimini Ko Chhori, the municipality opened fixed deposit accounts for 41 newborn girls this year. This initiative began last fiscal year to encourage families who welcome daughters.

Deputy Mayor Harihar Sharma said that the accounts for girls born this fiscal year are still being processed. Each daughter receives an initial deposit of NPR 2,500 from the municipality. The bank will also provide interest on these accounts, creating slow but steady savings for the children.

Sharma explained that the program aims to discourage gender-based abortion and promote a positive mindset toward daughters. The municipality hopes this financial step will also motivate parents to register their child’s birth immediately.

Parents who visit their ward office for birth registration receive support from the municipality. The office opens the fixed deposit account on their behalf and deposits the amount. Families are also encouraged to add more money to the account according to their capacity so the savings can grow over the years.
