Nepal’s Foreign Exchange Reserves Cross NPR 25 Trillion Mark in 11 Months

Foreign exchange reserves in Nepal have crossed NPR 25 trillion, reaching NPR 25.69 trillion by mid-June 2025. This marks a 25.9% increase from NPR 20.41 trillion recorded at the end of the previous fiscal year (mid-June 2024), according to data published by the central bank.

The reserves in US dollars grew by 22.2%, rising from 15.27 billion USD last year to 18.65 billion USD in mid-June 2025. Of the total foreign exchange reserves, NPR 22.74 trillion is held by Nepal Rastra Bank, which is a 23% increase from NPR 18.48 trillion the previous year. Commercial banks and financial institutions, excluding Nepal Rastra Bank, also increased their foreign currency holdings by 53.2%, from NPR 1.92 trillion to NPR 2.95 trillion.

Indian currency accounts for 20.5% of the total foreign exchange reserves as of mid-June 2025. Based on 11 months of import data in the current fiscal year, the banking sector has sufficient foreign exchange reserves to cover 17.6 months of goods imports and 14.7 months of goods and services imports. The total foreign exchange reserves correspond to 42.1% of Nepal’s gross domestic product (GDP), 122.9% of total imports, and 34.1% of the broad money supply.
