Mount Fuji is one of Japan’s most famous landmarks, and thousands of travelers visit every year to see its perfect cone shape, peaceful lakes, and beautiful mountain views. The best time to visit depends on what kind of experience you want, but most visitors agree that summer and early autumn offer the safest and clearest conditions.
Summer climbing season
The official climbing season runs from early July to early September. During this time, the weather is warmer, the trails are open, and mountain huts operate for visitors. It is the only period when beginners can safely climb to the summit. Even then, temperatures at the top can be very cold, so warm clothes are still necessary.
Clear views in autumn
If you only want to see Mount Fuji from below and enjoy photography, late September to November is ideal. The sky is usually clearer, offering stunning views of the mountain. Autumn colors around the nearby lakes also make the scenery more colorful.

Winter views but risky conditions
Mount Fuji in winter looks magical, with a full snow cap, but climbing is extremely dangerous. Only trained mountaineers should attempt it. For regular visitors, winter is still a great time to take photos from safe viewing spots like Lake Kawaguchi or Hakone.

Best time of day
Morning is usually the best time to see the mountain clearly. After noon, clouds often gather around the peak, making it harder to get a good view. Many travelers plan sunrise trips for brighter and more dramatic scenes.

Weekdays are less crowded than weekends, especially during the climbing season. Booking travel and accommodation in advance is highly recommended.
