Nepal Rastra Bank will not sell gold ashrafi coins during this year’s Tihar festival. However, the bank has started selling silver medallions instead.

Why no gold ashrafi this time?

According to Pratibha Adhikari, head of the Mint Division, said that unlike previous years, people will not be able to buy gold ashrafi from the bank this Dhanteras. However, silver coins will still be available for sale. Shealso said that the central bank is currently selling four types of silver coins, and people do not need to wait for Dhanteras to buy them.
According to the bank, four types of silver medallions weighing 10 grams each are available for sale. These include the Lakshmi Medallion, Ganesh Medallion, Gajalakshmi Medallion, and Cow Medallion.

Each medallion costs Rs 3,000. The bank has also set a rule that one person can buy only one medallion. This rule is meant to give more people the chance to purchase them.

To buy a medallion, buyers must bring a photocopy of their citizenship certificate or any identification document that includes their citizenship number. The bank has made this document mandatory for the purchase.

While gold coins are not available this year, silver medallions have become a popular alternative for those who wish to celebrate Tihar with something valuable and symbolic.
