Nepal’s government is planning to upgrade the food service at Singha Durbar and the Parliament building by bringing in meals from well-known hotels. This move is aimed at improving the daily meals and snacks served to members of parliament and staff, which has been a regular source of complaints.

For a long time, lawmakers have raised concerns about the poor quality of food in the existing canteen. Many said the meals were tasteless, not fresh, and didn’t match the standard expected at a national institution. After facing repeated criticism, the government decided it was time for a change.

Now, around 350 lawmakers and 400 staff members could soon be eating meals prepared by top-level hotels.

To make this shift possible, the government opened up a tender, inviting private companies to take over the food services. Four well-known hospitality providers showed interest:

  • Soaltee Hotel
  • Landmark Hotel
  • Five Spicy
  • Global Hospitality

So far, Soaltee Hotel appears to be the top contender. An official from the Parliament Secretariat said that Soaltee’s proposal looks promising in terms of service quality and meal standards. However, a final decision will only be made after carefully reviewing all offers.

What About the Old Canteen?

The food service used to be handled by Halt Hotel. But lawmakers weren’t happy with their meals, which led to the government deciding not to renew their contract. Instead, they called for a new tender to bring in better food services.

Once the new contract is finalized, the selected hotel will be responsible for preparing and delivering daily meals and snacks to everyone inside the Parliament building and Singha Durbar. The goal is to ensure that lawmakers and staff receive meals that are not just nutritious but also taste good.

This isn’t just about comfort it’s also about creating a better working environment for people involved in national-level duties. When food is better, mood and energy tend to improve too.
