The newly reconstructed Dharahara has proven to be a successful tourism and revenue-generating attraction for the Kathmandu Valley, pulling in an impressive Rs. 4.83 crore in income within a short span of 7.5 months since reopening. Official data indicates that the heritage site has welcomed over 2.6 lakh visitors since re-opened.
Since its soft reopening, the 22-storey tall Dharahara has been drawing steady crowds comprising both domestic and international tourists. The tower offers a panoramic view of Kathmandu city from its observation deck, as well as an informative museum and photo-worthy glass floor skywalk, making it a must-visit destination.
Officials from the National Reconstruction Authority stated that the high number of visitors and strong revenue performance reflects a growing interest in urban historical tourism. The site’s strategic location near the heart of Kathmandu, combined with improved infrastructure and digital ticketing systems, has helped maintain consistent traffic.
The original Dharahara, built in 1832, was destroyed during the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake. The reconstructed version, inaugurated in 2022, not only preserves the historical essence but also incorporates modern safety standards and facilities, contributing to public confidence and tourist attraction.
The funds generated are being directed towards the site’s maintenance, operational improvements, and promotional activities to boost Kathmandu’s appeal in national and international travel markets. Authorities have also hinted at expanding surrounding amenities, such as cultural centers and digital exhibits, to extend average visitor time and engagement.
Dharahara’s recent performance is a testament to how well-managed heritage can serve both as a symbol of national pride and a source of economic strength. If the current trend continues, the landmark could generate over Rs. 8 crore in a full year, making it one of Nepal’s top-earning tourism sites.
